An East Earl Township woman charged with killing two people in a fiery crash will have her case proceed to county court after stipulating to a prima facia case based on the Commonwealth’s allegations earlier this week.
Beth Fife, of the first block of Dawkins Drive, stipulated to the facts the Commonwealth alleged she committed in an affidavit of probable cause on Tuesday before Judge Joseph Stauffer.
The stipulation means that Fife agreed the Commonwealth had sufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof at a preliminary hearing, but still had the judge formally rule on whether or not there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to the Court of Common Pleas.
Judge Stauffer subsequently ruled that Fife’s case can proceed to the Court of Common Pleas on every charge originally filed in the criminal complaint: two counts of homicide by vehicle, two counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts recklessly endangering another person and three summary traffic offenses.
An attorney representing Fife told the court that “in light of the tragic circumstances” of the case that he hoped to avoid putting the victim’s family through a preliminary hearing.
Fife, 51, was traveling westbound along West 28th Division Highway in Penn Township when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into another car in the eastbound lanes shortly before noon on Dec. 1, 2023. The other vehicle’s occupants, Allen English and Grace English-Rohrer, were killed as a result of the collision and fire.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Fife was traveling nearly 40 mph above the posted speed limit when she lost control of her vehicle and crossed into oncoming traffic, striking English and English-Rohrer’s vehicle and causing it to catch fire.
Fife is currently free on $300,000 unsecured bail.
Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Corporal Alex Good filed the charges.
Assistant District Attorneys Kyle Linardo and Daniel Lingousky will prosecute the case.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
