Winter Driving Safety Tips
Winter is here and the snow is flying, the Gray County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to exercise caution while driving on snowy and icy roads. Here are some valuable winter driving tips to help you stay safe:
- Slow Down: Reduce your speed to match road conditions. It takes longer to stop on snowy or icy roads.
- Use Low Gear: If you're driving a manual transmission vehicle, use low gear to maintain control on uphill climbs.
- Increase Following Distance: Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you in case you need to stop suddenly.
- Know How to Handle a Skid: If your vehicle starts to skid, take your foot off the gas, don't slam on the brakes, and steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go.
- Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle: Make sure you have a winter driving emergency kit that includes items such as a flashlight, first aid kit, jumper cables, and a blanket.
- Stay Informed: Check the weather forecast before heading out and plan your route accordingly. Avoid traveling during heavy snowstorms or icy conditions if possible.
By following these winter driving tips, you can reduce your risk of being involved in a crash and stay safe on the roads this winter. Remember, it's always better to err on the side of caution and prioritize your safety and the safety of others.
