Greensburg, PA -- Westmoreland County Detectives charged two men accused of stealing deposit bags containing personal checks and money orders from local Giant Eagle pharmacies.
County Detective Ray Dupilka was contacted in January of 2023 by an investigator for Giant Eagle pharmacies in reference to a theft.
Between September and December of 2023, investigators noticed six deposit bags were stolen from the Ligonier and Hempfield Township pharmacies.
Upon investigation, detectives determined 27 customer checks issued to Giant Eagle totaling more than $1,300 were deposited into an ATM at PNC Bank.
Additionally, another $3,400 in money orders were cashed at various financial institutions.
The courier service provided the name of the driver who services the pharmacies and identified him as Adelin Itongwa.
In late February 2024, Allegheny County Police executed a search warrant at the residence of Itongwa in relation to a homicide investigation in Baldwin.
While searching his Monroeville apartment, detectives observed a plastic deposit bag from the Giant Eagle store in Ligonier with receipts inside dating back to August 2023.
A separate search warrant was executed by county detectives where the deposit bag was recovered in addition to personal checks issued to Giant Eagle pharmacy and other banking documents and receipts.
Itongwa was interviewed in reference to the investigation and told detectives he provided the checks and money orders to Mohamud Muya who endorsed them and cashed them at various Western Union locations.
The two would then split the proceeds from the thefts, according to investigators.
Adelin Itongwa, 23, and Mohamud Muya, 23, are facing charges of conspiracy and receiving stolen property. Itongwa is also facing theft; and Muya is also charged with forgery.
