On Tuesday, June 16th, 2026, at approximately 7:35 pm, an officer from the York City Police Department responded to an address in the 300 block of W. Philadelphia St for a disorderly subject. During the investigation of the incident (while inspecting a resident’s home for damage), the officer was attacked by a dog that got loose. The officer retreated and fired several rounds, striking and killing the dog. The owner of the dog, who appeared to be trying to secure his dog, sustained a leg injury as a result of the gunfire. The officer immediately provided aid to the victim, who was then transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. As a matter of follow-up (per Department policy), the Pennsylvania State Police were notified and have been brought in to conduct an independent investigation of the incident. Per that same protocol, the Officer has been placed on Admin Leave (while the investigation is conducted). With that said, we are thankful as the Officer remains okay, and the resident is in stable condition. We will continue to keep both the City's Leadership, the Media, and the Community informed as the investigation and review proceed.
Statement from Commissioner Muldrow
"It was an unfortunate incident, but I've talked with both individuals (my Officer and my Resident), and thankfully, they're both in good spirits. Moving forward, we'll deal with it, keep the community informed (openly and transparently) and keep our focus on responding well, improving, and making sure this community is safe".
Respectfully,
Michael Muldrow
Police Commissioner
The City of York
