Every year, national vehicle theft data reveals a list of the most frequently stolen vehicles in America. But being on the list doesn't necessarily mean a vehicle is easy to steal.
"Many of the vehicles that appear on these lists are simply very common on American roads," said Steve Wheeler, executive director of the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority. "When there are more of a particular make and model on the road, there are naturally more opportunities for theft."
In some cases, thieves target vehicles because they are in high demand for parts. In others, older models may lack newer anti-theft technology found in today's vehicles. The good news is that vehicle theft is declining nationwide. Still, thousands of vehicles are stolen every year, and most thefts continue to be crimes of opportunity.

"The most effective anti-theft device is still an attentive owner," Wheeler said. "A locked vehicle with no keys inside is far less attractive to a thief than one that offers an easy opportunity."
