National Police Week 2023

Created May 12th, 2023 | Updated May 15th, 2023

Police Week 2023 in Mesa County officially begins May 15, 2023. The community is invited to join the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office this week in showing appreciation for the men and women in law enforcement who keep our community safe. This week, community members are encouraged to wear blue ribbons to honor local peace officers as well as take part in several public events.  They can pick one up at the front counter of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
The Mesa County Sheriff's Office and the Grand Junction Police Department Honor Guards will begin Police Week with a ceremony raising the American flag to half-staff to honor those who have given their lives in service to our community. The flag will remain at half-staff for the duration of Police Week.
Since 1791, more than 26,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have given their lives while protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy, including our own Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, and Fruita Police Department.
Wreaths, first displayed in the Mesa County Sheriff's Office lobby, will be placed on Deputy Geer’s and Sergeant Weyler’s graves in a private ceremony this week to honor and remember their sacrifice.
Police Week honors not only fallen law enforcement officers but also those who currently serve our community.
On Tuesday morning, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office will join the Mesa County Board of Commissioners in recognizing the brave men and women of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and all of the public safety professionals in our community who are dedicated to the protection of others.  Following the posting of colors at the BOCC meeting, there will be two Coffee with a Cop events on Tuesday, May 16th, from 9:30 am – 10:30 am.  Join the Grand Junction Police Department and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office at Mountain Air Roasters or at the North Avenue Starbucks location.
Wednesday, May 17th, at 5:30 pm, the Grand Junction City Council will read the official Police Week proclamation during the City Council meeting.
The community is invited to join us in remembering those who were taken too soon. Mesa County Law Enforcement will be gathering at the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 6:00 pm for the Police Week Memorial Vigil. Families are encouraged to come early for a free community touch-a-truck from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Friday, May 19, 2023, wraps up Police Week with the return of the Glow N Games 5K! This event raises awareness and money for Special Olympics Colorado. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:00 pm at Long’s Park. There is still time to sign up for the glow-in-the-dark 5K run/walk here
Please join us in thanking all Mesa County Law Enforcement for their service to the community and the personal sacrifices made to ensure our safety.
