Due to the high winds, dust and smoke from the wildfires in New Mexico are visible in the area. There are currently no wildfires in Las Animas County


UPDATE (9:41 PM) - The fire is out and the fire department is still in the area mopping up. Streets remain closed.

Boulevard and Valley are closed due to a house fire in the 1000 block of Boulevard. All residents safely evacuated the house.


UPDATE (2:35 PM) - The River Bottom Fire is 100% contained. It burned 9 acres. There may still be some smoke in the area and some hot spots. All resources have been released.

UPDATE (April 13, 2022 - 10:20 AM) - Fire resources are back out on the River Bottom Fire. There will be smoke in the area as they continue to mop up operations. Please refrain from calling 911 for smoke in the area of the Village East mobile home park and behind the power plant.



The Las Animas County Sheriffs Office is asking for assistance locating a Missing/Lost person. David Shier was last seen at approximately 11:00am on February 11th, 2022. David is 81 years old and has some medical issues and possible dementia.

David is 6’00" tall weighs 162lbs. David was last seen wearing boots, blue jeans, black hoodie and possibly a hat.

Police and Fire Department on scene working a fire of an abandoned house. Avoid the area. 


(Update - 7:39 pm) Santa Fe Trail is open. Roads are very slick and while street crews are working to make them safe, it will take time.

Stay off the roads if you can. If you can't, take your time and drive safely.

(6:49 pm) Santa Fe Trail is temporarily closed due to black ice. City sand trucks are on the way.

Please drive carefully and stay home if you don't need to get out.


UPDATE: Troy Vigil was arrested for this incident on December 12, 2021.

Officers were called to the parking lot by Family Dollar at 8:21 this evening for a person who was injured during an altercation. The victim was taken to Mt. San Rafael Hospital and was released after being treated for non-life threatening injuries. During the assault a gun was fired. The suspect was detained and questioned by officers and then released. The investigation is ongoing and an update will be provided when the investigation is complete. 


(Update) 8:05 pm- Fire is out and streets are open.

Church and Convent Streets closed due to fire at old Trinidad Catholic School. Trinidad Fire is on scene fighting the fire. Check back for updates.


UPDATE (10:22 pm) Suspect is in custody. 

(9:48 pm) Trinidad Police are currently searching the area around Wal-Mart for a male suspect who stabbed a male party after an altercation in the parking lot. The suspect is wearing a brown jacket or blanket and is on foot. 

The victim was transported to the hospital and is currently being treated. 

Anyone in the area who sees a person matching the suspect's description is asked to call the Trinidad Police Department dispatch center at 719-846-4441.


UPDATE (8:32 pm): The 800 block of Baltimore is open. Officers have finished collecting evidence and are leaving the area.

UPDATE (7:55 pm): The bomb squad has removed the device. It was placed in a secure container and they will inspect it further tomorrow at their facility in Pueblo.  TPD remains on scene collecting evidence.

UPDATE (7:50 pm): The device is currently being removed by the bomb squad.

UPDATE (7:13 pm): The bomb squad has deployed a robot to investigate.
