The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of multiple Emergency Scams. An Emergency Scam typically targets parents, grandparents, or other family members. The caller will call or send a message claiming a family member is in trouble and urges the victim to immediately wire money or purchase gift cards to help with an emergency.
In one particular case, the family member was told their loved one had been abducted and would be harmed if they did not wire them money. The caller instructed them not to notify anyone or contact any law enforcement.
If you get a phone call or message claiming your loved one is in danger, do not hesitate to attempt to call them immediately! If you cannot reach them, call someone who knows where they are and can contact them to verify they are safe. While it may sound simple, scammers are experts at creating a sense of urgency and pressuring you to act immediately, saying that your loved one’s safety is at risk.
If you cannot contact your loved one, you are encouraged to contact law enforcement immediately. Every attempt will be made to ensure their safety. The Mesa County Sheriff's Office can help determine the call's legitimacy by calling us at (970) 242-6707.
